Make May Purple for stroke is an annual stroke awareness month, taking place every May.
Strokes are a medical emergency and require urgent treatment. The sooner the person receives treatment for stroke, the less damage is likely to happen. If you suspect that you or someone is having a stroke, phone 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance.
Symptoms of a stroke
The main symptoms of a stroke can be remembered with the word F.A.S.T:
- Face- The persons face may have dropped on one side. Can they smile?
- Arms- The person may not be able to lift their arms and keep them up because of weakness on or numbness
- Speech- Can the person speak? Speech may become slurred or garbled; they may have problems understanding what you are saying to them.
- Time- Dial 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance if you see any these signs or symptoms.
Stroke strikes every five minutes and destroys lives. When stroke strikes, part of your brain shuts down due to lack of oxygen and nutrients. This can lead to brain injury, disability and possible death.
Individuals show their support for those who have been affected by stroke, and help to raise awareness and essential funds for the Stroke Association each May, by simply wearing something purple. This can be done in the comfort of your own home or in the office with workmates. Every penny raised will help provide support for stroke survivors.
