Noun: A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.
Everyday we each have a set of pressures, commitments and demands to juggle and for so many of us, we find ourselves where we feel overwhelmed. The pressures associated with the expectations to ourselves, family, work, health and wellbeing can often seem too much and it is often only when we feel like we want to run away, become angry or simply feel stuck that we are stressed.
Self care for our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellness can be out of balance and feel insurmountable and this is associated with the feelings often paraphrased as Fight, Flight or Freeze.
It is often our perception of the reality of our circumstances that leave us feeling unable to keep up with the pace of life and the ever changing demands of modern life. The common problems associated with this are difficult relationships, catastrophising our situation, mounting debt, erratic sleep, fogged thoughts, lack of concentration and more.
Most employers now offer support for employees by way of an Employee Assistance Programme and/or Occupational Health Service.
