Being an island surrounded by sea, the United Kingdom has a natural defense to non-air borne diseases unlike other landlocked countries such as Paraguay and Moldova. However, in the recent weeks a new world epidemic known as the Coronavirus has been closely monitored by the Department of Health and Social care and Public Health England.

The first discovery of the Coronavirus dates to the 1960’s, yet the recent adaptation of the Coronavirus has out-broken in Wuhan, China. The virus is typically found and transmitted in mammals and birds. Yet, in humans the virus has seen to negatively influence the respiratory system. The symptoms of the Coronavirus can be disguised as the ‘common cold’, runny nose; sore throat and headaches are the tell-tale signs that you should look out for. However, if you have recently visited Wuhan, medical attention is advised.

This outbreak in humans has caused a precautionary set of procedures to be implemented in all UK airports in order to help screen the passengers travelling to the UK from in and around Wuhan. China. At this moment in time the risk to the UK population is deemed to be ‘low’ and that if you are planning to travel to this part of the world, the advice stated is to not change your plans at this moment in time.  However, to minimize the risk of transmission you should ensure that you follow the advice listed below:

  • Maintain good personal and hand hygiene
  • Avoid unnecessary contact with wildlife
  • If you develop any respiratory issues following visiting Wuhan, ensure you phone ahead to the medical practice prior to visiting the medical Center
