There were some interesting areas covered within the presentation and I wanted to share a number of key areas discussed.

It’s natural for a ‘reluctant worker’ to put barriers in front of returning to work with a fight/flight scenario being the typical traits when considering a return and when being asked to engage in mediation. It’s important for the worker to understand that mediation will be effectively delivered by a third party and offer a non-judgmental platform to enable open discussion to work towards resolution.

An effective mediator will:
-Build Rapport
-Ask Open Questions
-Consider thoughts from the opposite point of view
-Be empathetic
-Be reflective
-Be Respectful

There tends to be five key areas a mediator will tackle as part of mediation.
1. An introduction rapport building
2. Identify issues
3. Consider options
4. Record and come to agreement
5. At the centre of the above should sit exploration of the key issues
